TESTIMONIALS
"In 2017, I was IMPACTED out of DCPS, because I refused to change grades for students who never reported to school, and points were also taken away without just cause. I did not receive any help from the Chancellor’s Office, because he was friends with the principal. Additionally, I did not receive help from the WTU, and they failed to return my phone calls. However, I received a tremendous amount of help from my Building Representative at that time, Monica Brokenborough. Although she was no longer working in DCPS at the time of my termination, she wrote my grievances, accompanied me to my meeting with Labor Management, was my advisor, and gave me knowledge of things that would benefit me with getting my job back. I am pleased to state that DCPS reinstated me in 2018. I owe all of my thanks to Monica Brokenborough, because she was the only one who helped me get my job back. Thank you for standing with me."
Ms. Flemmings - Science Teacher

“Without knowing anything about me other than that I was experiencing unjust treatment, Monica immediately offered help. She went out of her way to meet with me in order to explain the grievance process step by step. Monica and I spent nearly two hours reviewing the WTU contract to ensure that my grievance was well researched. Throughout this experience Monica has been supportive and demonstrated her unwavering commitment to the teachers of DCPS. Monica is extremely knowledgeable about the WTU contract, DCPS and has real solutions to help eradicate the problems teachers face on a daily basis. After submitting my grievance, Monica has continued to check in with me to ensure that I am safe at my school. It is my belief that Monica and Morgan can truly restore this broken system and regain the trust of the teachers within this district.”

"I would like to take this opportunity to recommend Ms. Monica Brokenborough for the position of WTU President. As a former colleague of Ms. Brokenborough I’ve had the privilege of working very closely with her during her recent stint as WTU Chapter Leader at Ballou High School. There she performed all her assigned duties with professionalism and competence. While at Ballou High School. Ms. Brokenborough worked indefatigably to ensure the contract between the WTU and DCPS was followed with fidelity. In addition to that, Ms. Brokenborough assisted with investigative work of the Washington Post on the front-page expose of the mass exodus of pedagogues from Ballou High School.
Ms. Brokenborough has also demonstrated tremendous expertise with her knowledge of the contract in writing grievances. Her exceptional research skills and ability to write compelling arguments were extremely valuable to teachers at Ballou, where she’s sorely missed now. While at Ballou, on a day-to-day, basis Ms. Brokenborough provided assistance to teachers who worked under duress from an inept and imperious administration.
I strongly encourage you to vote for Monica Brokenborough as the president of the Washington Teachers Union. I believe you would be extremely pleased with her agile acumen, her tenacity and I feel certain that she has a bright future in the labor union world."
Sincerely,
Mr. Brian Butcher - Social Studies Teacher

"Monica Brokenborough is not just the average leader, she is one that not only leads through her voice, but her actions as well. If you want the work done, call on Monica to roll up her sleeves and be on the call of duty. She is not just an advocate for teachers rights but a practitioner always fighting for justice. She is a people person, a team leader, great communicator and never gives up until the battle is won. She is persistent and resilient. An ardent worker, Monica is not just working for those whom she serves, behind the scenes, but also joins them on the battlefield through dreaded winter days and scorching spring months - from school board meetings, council meetings, late evening union meetings, negotiation and labor meetings, testifying on camera or even marching on the Mayor's office steps. Whatever it is, she is relentless in seeking justice for teachers and make sure they are all treated fairly and get what they deserve from the school district. Sometimes that meant uncovering some of the darkest issues buried under the school system's bureaucracy, exposing fraud in the system that suppress teachers voice and craft, and facing the school district's giants face to face. Regardless of the situation, she never backs down when injustice rears its head against teachers - negatively affecting their careers and livelihood. She's a "man for all seasons". You feel empowered when you know Monica is fighting for you, especially because she has also been in your shoes".

"Monica Brokenborough truly enjoys getting involved in her community. She is an exceptional woman who will represent all individuals and teachers who are unfairly mistreated. Monica represented many members as she served as the WTU union representative at Ballou Sr. High School. Monica won all the staff grievances. The staff knew we had a union representative that put children and educators first and would not stop supporting us until the change has taken place."
Sincerely,
Duane Thomas - Special Education Teacher

"Ms. Brokenborough will make an amazing President of the Washington Teachers' Union because she is always there for the students and the staff of every school she has taught at including Frank W. Ballou Senior High School. Since being at Ballou SR High School Ms. Brokenborough has helped plenty students including myself in working towards a brighter future. She held the first annual Miss Ballou pageant during the 2015-2016 school year. This pageant alone she helped over four young ladies with wardrobe and anything else that they needed in order to feel and compete at their very best. While organizing the entire program herself, with two student assistants, the contestants were treated with respect and rewarded whether or not they won or lost. While at Frank W. Ballou SR High School Ms. Brokenborough also exposed the injustices that the teachers were facing while working there. While teaching at Ballou Ms. Brokenborough brought light to the situation of how the teachers were being treated by the principal, how grades were falsified for the students to graduate on time, and other issues within the building.
Once light was brought to the issues, Ms .Brokenborough took a stand for the injustices that happened to the teachers. Ms. Brokenbrough arranged a march back in 2016 to bring awareness to the different issues in the school system that were failing the staff and students. While working at Frank W. Ballou she also fought for the staff to be treated with respect and fairly. There was a teacher inside of Ballou that got assaulted by a student while working and Ms. Brokenborough assisted her with filing the proper reports to fill in order to receive the benefits that she needed in order to recover from the situation. Without Ms. Brokenborough being in so many people’s lives including my own there wouldn’t anyone to fight for what people deserve in life and knowledge of different situations.
Ms. Brokenborough is the best candidate to be the president of the Washington Teachers' Union. She is the most caring, compassionate, understanding, determined, and truth seeking person that I know. She will be the best president because she will make sure everyone is treated correctly with respect and everything will be moving smoothly with her in charge."

"I’ve been very impressed with Monica Brokenborough since she became WTU rep at Ballou SHS. She has proven herself to be very committed to addressing issues to ensure teachers are protected from senseless and outlandish violations to the contract that governs DCPS. Her hard work, devotion and dedication to learn are all excellent qualities for president.
As building rep, I was most impressed with Monica for her support with filing my grievance for non-payment of class coverage and leave taken this school year. As a teacher and single parent of two young children, I greatly rely on my paycheck to support my family. When the incident took place, Monica walked me though the grievance process, consoled me, and offered financial assistance in my time of need. Before voting for Monica, I’ve never experienced such efficiency and benevolence from a union rep ever.
Monica is not only a reliable, trustworthy resource, she is always diligent and purposeful in representing educators at Ballou. With that being said, I wholeheartedly and unequivocally recommend Monica Brokenborough for the next WTU President. If selected, Monica will be an excellent asset to DCPS and our union."

"I formally met Monica Brokenborough while she was serving as a WTU Building Representative during my second year teaching in the District. Ms. Brokenborough continually aided me in navigating the many common obstacles that face all emerging educators. I believe that the first three years in education are critical for teacher retention, and can ultimately determine whether a teacher leaves the profession feeling powerless or continues on the path to becoming a career educator. I can say that Ms. Brokenborough’s mentorship and guidance enabled me to advocate for myself and my students from an informed and empowered position, which I know will serve me well in the years to come.
Ms. Brokenborough is deeply knowledgeable about WTU policies and their practical application at the school level. She is a progressively passionate advocate for transformative union leadership and a champion for educators in the truest sense.
At a moment in time when unions of all sorts are under attack I can think of no better individual to spearhead the future of the Washington Teachers Union and advocate for teacher’s rights within our beloved District."
